Adult Volunteer Program


Our volunteers are an integral part of the Fort Worth Zoo staff. Volunteers work with, and complement our paid employees. Many rewards are associated when you volunteer at the Fort Worth Zoo. You'll receive the satisfaction of knowing that your efforts have a positive effect on Zoo animals and patrons. We provide periodic training, behind-the-scenes tours, Zoo passes and many other benefits, for our volunteers. We require the following of all applicants:

  • Telephone interview
  • Volunteer orientation
  • Completed volunteer application
  • Successful background check and drug screen
  • $40 non-refundable volunteer application fee
  • Agreement to abide by Zoo policies and guidelines
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Commitment to a one-year schedule

While not all volunteer positions are open at all times of the year, the following positions are generally available:

Interpretive Volunteers (Docents)

Conduct interpretive talks to Zoo patrons about specific animal exhibits while utilizing related artifacts

Education Assistant

Help with class preparation including crafts and set-up, assist teachers with monitoring students and completing activities, and general office duties

Keeper Assistant

Help clean and maintain selected animal areas of the Zoo. (Note: This position has little or no direct animal contact.)

Office Assistant

Answer phones, type, file and perform general office duties

Gift Shop

Assist with stocking, pricing and helping shoppers with merchandise and Zoo information

Zoo Ambassadors

Monitor specific areas with an eye toward answering guests' questions and animal/guest safety or assisting with various marketing/promotional events

Special Event Volunteers


The Zoo is always in need of additional help for special events. Join the Zoo Crew and have some fun while helping the Zoo. The days, times and age requirements are different for each event and most are staffed by e-mail registration. For information on upcoming special events, please click here.

Teen Volunteer Program


Planning is currently underway for the Summer 2008 Fort Worth Zoo Volunteens Program. The program is open to youth ages 12 through 17 who will be entering the 7th through 12th grades in September of 2008. Our summer Volunteens will serve as teacher aides to the FWZ Education Department's Summer Zoo Camp Instructors. Volunteers will gather materials, prepare and assist campers with activities, help escort campers on daily Zoo trips and present a 2008 Zoo Camp song, craft or story to an assigned group of Campers.

Prospective teen applicants and a parent or guardian are required to attend one of three orientations to be held in February 2008. The dates are:

  • Tuesday, February 19
  • Wednesday, February 20
  • Thursday, February 21

Orientation sessions will be held at 6:00 pm in the Fort Worth Zoo Education Center.

Reservations are not necessary. After the orientation sessions begin, access will be restricted, so please be on time.
